Semmco Life Protection Systems has supplied Emergency Escape Breathing Devices (EEBDs) to Würth MRO, Safety & Metalworking to support compliance across the US freight rail sector in line with key Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) deadlines.
Under updated FRA regulations, Class I and II freight railroads that are transporting hazardous materials must provide atmosphere-supplying Emergency Escape Breathing Apparatus (EEBA), or rebreathers as they are commonly referred to, for locomotive crews and other covered employees. The products had to be able to deliver 15-minutes of oxygen and the compliance deadline for Class I and II railroads was March 26, 2026, with Class III railroads required to comply by March 26, 2027.
Working through its exclusive US railroad distribution partner Würth MRO, Safety & Metalworking, Semmco LPS has already delivered tens of thousands of EEBD units into the North American rail market, supporting major freight railroad operators as they implement the new safety requirements.
The FRA rule requires railroads carrying hazardous materials that pose inhalation hazards to provide atmosphere-supplying EEBA capable of enabling safe escape from Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health (IDLH) environments. The regulation also introduces obligations covering inspection, maintenance, storage and employee training.
Richard Young of Semmco LPS said: “The changes to FRA legislation created an urgent need for NIOSH or CE compliant respiratory escape equipment across the US rail sector. Working with Würth MRO, Safety & Metalworking has enabled us to rapidly support rail operators with compliant EEBD solutions, training and lifecycle support.”
The CE-certified EEBD solution from Semmco LPS met the FRA’s requirements for a 15-minute atmosphere-supplying escape device at a time when limited approved options were available in the market. According to the company, the initial Class I railroad rollout quickly expanded into a major nationwide supply programme through Würth MRO, Safety & Metalworking.
As part of the programme, Semmco LPS has also delivered train-the-trainer instruction across multiple US railroad locations, helping operators implement compliant deployment and ongoing refresher training programmes. The partnership is now supporting the next phase of market adoption as Class III railroads move toward their compliance deadline.
Young added: “This regulation has introduced a completely new safety framework for respiratory escape protection in US freight rail. Our focus is not only on supplying compliant EEBD equipment, but also supporting operators with training, maintenance and the recycling of the product once it has been deployed or exceeded its 15-year lifespan.”
