HEAD15 Working/Rescue Set FAQS

How do I dispose of a HEAD set once it has reached the end of its life?

Once a HEAD set has reached the end of its life (12 years from release date), it should be returned to Semmco LPS for disposal and/or recycling.  By returning end of life sets to us, we can then ensure strict disposal and recycling processes are followed.  You can find our contact details here.

How are the HEAD sets revalidated?

The range of HEAD sets require revalidation at 6 and 9 years and this is carried out by trained technicians at Semmco LPS.  Any sets requiring revalidation should be returned to Semmco LPS  Head Office and you can find our contact details here.

How much maintenance do the HEAD sets require?

The HEAD range is maintenance free for up to 12 years if not used and will need to be revalidated at 6 & 9 years respectively by Semmco LPS.  The HEAD sets should be returned to our UK Head Office for revalidation.  See our contact page for details of our company address.

How long can the HEAD products be stored for?

The sets can be stored for up to 12 years but should be validated at 6 and 9 years respectively.

What’s the difference between Escape and Working/Rescue sets?

The main difference between the escape and working/rescue sets is the breathing rate that they are tested to, to define their rated duration.  Working/rescue sets are tested at 50 L/min and escape sets are tested at 35 L/min. When selecting the set that you require a suitable risk assessment by a competent person should be completed that will define whether you need an escape (move from/through the hazard to safety) set or a working/rescue (go into a hazard to complete work or rescue) set.
Visually the Semmco HEAD sets are provided in an orange carry case for escape sets and a blue carry case for working/rescue sets. The EEBD escape sets are provided in an orange case.

Are there instructions or videos showing how to don and doff the sets?

Yes there are videos on the website that show how to don and doff both the HEAD Sets and the EEBD Sets. Follow this link to see the donning and doffing instructions for the HEAD range and this link to see the donning and doffing instructions for the EEBD range.

Do I need to have face fit testing for the HEAD Set’s?

No it is not required.

How can you carry and store the sets for emergency use?

The HEAD range is supplied in a sturdy carry case that can be carried over the shoulder, via belt loops or stored in an accessible area within a facility or vehicle.
The EEBD Marine has been specifically designed to fit into existing storage brackets or stowage areas onboard ships. The family of EEBD’s can be stored in a wall bracket, we can supply these to you. There is an inbuilt shoulder strap that can be used. If the EEBD is to be carried on a regular bases optional extra carrying solutions can be purchased, please contact us to discuss what is the best for your application.

As the HEAD sets and EEBD sets contain a chemical do I need to store them carefully?

No, both the HEAD sets and the EEBD sets can be stored safely in a suitable storage location such as a cupboard, shelf or bracket. The HEAD sets are packed in a vacuum sealed bag inside the carry case. The EEBD sets are stored in a sealed, sturdy carry case.

Can I get training on how to use the products?

Yes, Semmco LPS provides both full day and half day training sessions depending on the customer’s requirement and the training can be carried out on-site or vitually via video training. Please contact us to discuss your needs.

Does the training session include being able to don and doff the sets?

Yes, Semmco LPS has developed a specific training set that provides the same experience as using the ‘live’ product so that those attending the training courses can become proficient in how to don and doff both the HEAD Escape Sets and the EEBD Escape Sets and feel confident in their capabilities.

How do you know if the set is safe to be used?

Each HEAD/EEBD Escape and HEAD Working/Rescue set is fitted with a visual indicator that shows the validity of the set.  If the indicator is blue it confirms the set is viable.  If the indicator is pink it indicates that it could have been exposed to moisture and therefore should not be used.  The set can be returned to Semmco LPS for inspection.

Can you refill the HEAD set once it’s been used?

Used sets can be returned to Semmco LPS for refurbishment after use. Used sets should be double plastic bagged after use to prevent further contamination and returned with their carry case. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.

Do the sets have a storage cylinder for the oxygen?

The HEAD and EEBD ranges do not require a storage cylinder.  The breathing source is supplied via the the potassium superoxide (KO2) chemical that is contained in the sets generators. As the wearer breathes across the KO2 in the closed breathing circuit, the moisture in their exhaled breath creates a chemical reaction and the KO2 liberates fresh oxygen and removes CO2. As a result there is no cylinder present.

How does the set work?

The HEAD Escape and Working/Rescue Breathing Apparatus and EEBD Escape Sets are closed circuit chemical oxygen re-breathers using the same principle that involves KO2 (potassium superoxide).  The wearer breathes into the set and the moisture in their breath reacts with the KO2 stored in the generators and produces fresh oxygen and removes the CO2 waist gas in the breathing circuit. There is a reservoir which stores approximately 6 litres of oxygen that is replenished every time the wearer breaths in and out of the set.

Is there technical information about how the set works?

Yes, we have product datasheets that can be downloaded from the website, just click on this link for the HEAD Datasheet and this link for the EEBD Datasheet.

What is the duration of the sets?

The HEAD range includes three different durations for escape sets – 10 minutes, 15 minutes and 30 minutes. The HEAD working/rescue sets are 15 minutes.  An in-built audio and visual alarm indicates the duration of the set.
There are two variations of the EEBD Escape Set depending on which environment they are to be used. For the Marine industry the duration is 15 minutes and for any other industrial application the duration is 20 minutes.

Are the sets easy to put on?

Yes, both the HEAD range and the EEBD range are very simple to don.
The HEAD Escape Set is simply pulled over the head and the internal oronasal mask positioned to cover the wearer’s nose and mouth.
The EEBD Escape Set is simple too – once removed from the storage case and hung around the wearer’s neck, they simply insert the mouth piece and position the nose clip before pulling the hood over their head(if required).
