Lithium-ion Battery Fires Bring Escape Breathing Equipment Into Focus At SMM 2026

With lithium-ion battery fires becoming an increasing hazard aboard marine vessels of all sizes, Semmco Life Protection Systems will be sharing its knowledge in short duration escape and working rescue breathing apparatus at SMM 2026 on Hall B1 Upper floor – 318.

On display at SMM will be Semmco’s EEBD Marine product which has been specifically designed and approved for use within the marine environment, meeting all the requirements of the SOLAS and the Marine Equipment Directive.

The Semmco Emergency Escape Breathing Device (EEBD) is a self-contained, short duration, chemical oxygen (O2) breathing apparatus that provides a supply of fresh oxygen so that the wearer can breathe freely, ensuring a quick and safe escape. It is designed to fit into existing storage systems and when required is quick and simple to don, providing the wearer with up to 15 minutes oxygen supply.

Alongside its product expertise, Semmco is also able to provide product training and assist with placement advice. EEBDs, despite their life-saving potential, are often perceived as simple, static pieces of safety equipment. Yet for the shipping and marine sector, their positioning has profound operational consequences. EEBDs determine whether a crew member can maintain situational awareness, negotiate reduced visibility, and reach safety before smoke, heat or toxic gases overwhelm escape routes.
