About the Semmco Marine 15 EEBD

An on-ship EEBD (Emergency Escape Breathing Device) is critical in the event on an emergency. The Semmco Marine 15 EEBD is a self-contained, 15 minute, closed circuit oxygen re-breather that provides a supply of oxygen so that the wearer can breathe freely in a contaminated or oxygen deficient environment, ensuring a quick and safe escape.

The Semmco Marine 15 EEBD uses KO2 (potassium superoxide) to provide oxygen to the user.  As the EEBD is pulled from its carry case, a starter system provides oxygen into the reservoir bag.  The user places the set around their neck, if practical takes a deep breath, inserts the mouthpiece and applies the nose clip before breathing normally.  As they exhale into the bag, moisture from their exhaled breath activates the KO2 that then absorbs the CO2 and liberates oxygen.  The EEBD continues to generate oxygen all the time the wearer breathes, providing up to 15 minutes oxygen supply for escape and 60 minutes oxygen supply at rest.

The Marine 15 EEBD is stored in an orange, rigid case that is discarded once the set is in use.  This case is designed to fit existing EEBD storage systems and a visual indicator on the storage case clearly identifies the validity of the equipment.  If the indicator is blue the set is viable; if the indicator is pink there may be ingress of moisture and the equipment should be returned to Semmco LPS for inspection and recertification.  Assuming the case is not damaged, the anti-tamper label and seal are still intact, the unit is within expiry date and the visual indicator is blue and not pink, the Marine 15 EEBD can be stored for up to 15 years.

The Marine 15 EEBD is extremely easy to don and practical to wear. An adjustable neck strap supports the weight of the set and an elongated tube from the mouthpiece to the top of the canister ensures the set doesn’t drag in the mouth as it is being used. The breathing bag is bright yellow and so those wearing the set can be easily identified.

At the end of the set’s life it can be returned to Semmco LPS for disposal and recycling. View our full range of EEBD here.

"We compared the HEAD10 to our previous escape breathing apparatus. The cost saving and less cumbersome design made it very appealing. If we needed to use it, I have full confidence in the simplicity of this device and it enabling a safe and efficient escape."
Centrica Energy, Shaun O’Connor, Operations Technician
"During the early stages of the pandemic, Semmco LPS provided exceptional support to us, maintaining a responsive and speedy refurbishment programme for the HEAD CSRE sets that we used."
Patrick Morris, HM Prison & Probation Service, June 2020
Thank you Semmco LPS, we sent some CSRE Sets for urgent refurbishment and got them back very quickly. Really appreciated.

Product Support FAQs
How much does EEBD weigh?

The EEBD Marine and Industrial Escape Sets both weigh approximately 1.3kg (2kg with the storage case).

How long can EEBD sets be stored for?

EEBD Industrial and Marine can be stored for up to 15 years. During that time, regular visual inspections should be carried out to ensure the set remains viable. The EEBD is stored in an airtight, sealed container. As long as the seal remains intact, the set will be viable. However if the seal is broken moisture could enter and this could result in the EEBD not being able to be used. An easy to see visual indicator on the storage box enables checks without removing the set from its storage point. If the visual indicator is blue the set is viable; if the visual indicator is pink the set is compromised and should not be used.

Are there instructions or videos showing how to don and doff the sets?

Yes there are videos on the website that show how to don and doff both the HEAD Sets and the EEBD Sets. Follow this link to see the donning and doffing instructions for the HEAD range and this link to see the donning and doffing instructions for the EEBD range.

How can you carry and store the sets for emergency use?

The HEAD range is supplied in a sturdy carry case that can be carried over the shoulder, via belt loops or stored in an accessible area within a facility or vehicle.
The EEBD Marine has been specifically designed to fit into existing storage brackets or stowage areas onboard ships. The family of EEBD’s can be stored in a wall bracket, we can supply these to you. There is an inbuilt shoulder strap that can be used. If the EEBD is to be carried on a regular bases optional extra carrying solutions can be purchased, please contact us to discuss what is the best for your application.
